Messages From the High Desert
by Clint Swink
Nearly 1,000 years ago, when the Mesa Verdeans mysteriously abandoned the high Colorado Plateau desert of the American southwest, they took with them their ceramic production knowledge while leaving behind a legacy of enchanting pottery. Now, like no other book in the world, Messages From the High Desert details authentic production techniques of that pottery based on 18 years of dedicated research and production by Clint Swink.
Lavishly illustrated with 605 Black-and-white photos and 50 line drawings, Messages guides the reader through the processes necessary to authentically replicate not only painted ware, but corrugated pottery as well. The clear illustrations and easy to follow text, make this book a valuable potter's resource while the wealth of research data creates a unique archaeological reference. All will find the firing chapter to be the most thorough presentation on prehistoric firing anywhere.
For inspiration, Messages incorporates unique mirror photographs for complete viewing of the original artwork of 158 museum artifacts from the Mesa Verde Culture. These pots, when combined with the detailed information gleaned from the production of thousands of authentic replicas and hundreds of trench kiln firings, yield the unique master work that is Messages From the High Desert.
Messages helps us all travel the strong path of understanding about our Southwestern predecessors who silently communicate with us through their art.

Review of Low-firing and Burnishing

I'm always happy to see new books on alternative firing methods and low-temperature firing techniques! Sumi von Dassow takes a focused approach with her latest book, using burnishing as the constant for all the processes covered. Her experiences as a writer, artist, and educator shine in how the information flows from a history of burnishing to its many techniques, then followed by the firing and finishing options.

She begins by addressing historical burnished pottery from China, the Mediterranean, Africa and North and South America, something that's very nice to see. With the focus of her book revolving around this kind of work, providing a diverse and rich history of its use and development sets the stage well for the content to follow. I believe the more informed you are about the history and use of a technique, the better off you are in trying to incorporate and adapt it to your own work.

Von Dassow covers burnishing information to prepare the clay surface for all the low-firing techniques covered later. She gives advice for burnishing high-fire/stoneware clay, high-talc earthenware and leather-hard clay along with what tools and materials are most efficient. A wonderful 2-page compatibility chart matches burnishing approaches and low-firing techniques with different clay bodies. She then moves on to making, applying, and burnishing terra sigillata, and supplies recipes along with troubleshooting tips to assure good results.

Different firing techniques get the most out of a burnished surface and three chapters are dedicated to this. Each chapter includes full-color images of work that range from contemporary to indigenous pots. Assorted combustibles, colorants, materials, tools and firing chambers are well covered for each firing technique giving the reader plenty of options to choose from. Von Dassow ...

Kiln Janus1613 240v Glass/Ceramic 2350°F

Paragon has a digital top-loading firebrick kiln called the Janus-1613.

It is designed to fire both glass and pottery. It has heating elements in the top and sides. The element in the lid uses a new element groove that eliminates element pins. The sidewall elements are seated in dropped, recessed grooves.

Choose between glass and ceramic firing with a toggle switch. In the glass position, heat comes from the top element and one sidewall element. In the ceramic position, heat comes from all six rows of sidewall elements; the lid element remains off. The Janus-1613 uses the Sentry digital temperature controller manufactured by the Orton Ceramic Foundation for Paragon. It includes Cone-Fire and Ramp-Hold modes with up to 20 segments and memory for four programs. The controller includes a programmed Cone-Fire cool-down for experimenting with glazes and cooling rates.Janus

The Paragon Janus-1613 is rated to 2350°F (cone 10). The 8-sided, 1.75 cubic foot interior is 16 1/2” wide and 13 1/4” deep. Fires ceramics or glass at the flip of a switch.

WonderBats
Perform similar to plaster, no need to wire off
1/2" thick material, resists warping and is very durable
Drilled for standard 3/8" diameter pins on 10" centers
What are WonderBats made of?
WonderBats are made with a treated wood composite panel product that was developed for applications in exterior and high moisture interior environments. It is manufactured from wood chips and phenolic resins, which makes it resistant to moisture. It has a uniform density and thickness compared to wood, which means there are more consistent physical properties throughout the board making it resistant to warping. It is environmentally friendly; no old growth timber is used to make it. Instead, byproducts from sawmill operations and forest thinnings are converted into the wood chips which are used to create the material that WonderBats are made. Also, because this material is made using phenolic resins it has essentially no formaldehyde emissions.
Do you need to wire off when using WonderBats?
No. The material they made of is porous and performs similar to plaster. When the clay reaches the leather-hard stage it will release from the WonderBat.
Do WonderBats need to be waterproofed?
No. If fact we strongly recommend against it. The material they are made out of is extremely water resistant but is also porous which it why they perform similar to plaster. If they are sealed or waterproofed it can greatly reduce or eliminate their ability to release when the clay becomes leather-hard.
